Champagne 2015 scored 94. Finely balanced and structured with real freshness, and Pinot Noir excelled. The vintage divides critics: an amplified vegetal, ash-like aromatic, probably drought-related, has made it age more variably than expected.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2015 taste like?
2015 shows off the sunny fruits of the year with more grip and intensity than the 2008 and 2012. Fleshy orange, red pear, dried pineapple and chewy grapefruit peel build on a firmly structured frame, although there is a suppleness of nougat and acacia honey lurking in the middle that promises to emerge with a little patience. The bustling energy of the vintage is sitting proud for now, bitter almond and fruit skin building to an energising close despite the moderate acidity. An edition that will perform especially well at the table. 90% Pinot Noir, 10% Chardonnay from 8 Grand Cru villages. Dosage 6 g/L.

2020 to 2042
In its window now, and has until 2042.
Champagne 2012 scored 95. The rare combination of high sugar and high acidity, concentrated and vibrant. Pinot Noir is exceptional. Widely called the most complete vintage of the modern era.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2012 taste like?
A generous golden colour betrays the dominance of Pinot Noir in the blend; this theme thereafter maintained by aromatics of fig, wild strawberries and Mirabelle plums; behind that, jasmine, red apples and a distant whiff of woodsmoke. Engaging already, in other words. One’s impressions are confirmed and amplified on the palate, with the aspiration voiced by both chef de caves Dominique and Didier, to allow the ‘cooler’ Pinot Noir sites full rein. This is eloquently evidenced by a subtle and deftly textured structure, the primary fruit notes of nectarine and citrus peel underscored by a richer, still somewhat reticent, core, darker and more savoury of intent and oh, so subtle at the moment. I have every confidence that this characteristic will come into its own over the longer term and mark the 2012 as one of the more successful outings for this outstanding cuvee.

2019 to 2048
In its window now, and has until 2048.
Champagne 2008 scored 97. Vivid, well-structured and classic, with fine saline freshness and purity of fruit. The benchmark twenty-first century vintage and built for the long haul.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2008 taste like?
Now almost blanc de noirs, boasting 92% Pinot Noir and just 8% Chardonnay from 60%-70% estate vineyards. La Grande Dame is one of the most affordable of Champagne’s elite prestige set, and the stunning 2008 vintage was intricately engineered by the masterful Dominique Demarville for the long haul. It unites all of the enduring potential of its thundering grands crus with the tension and energy of this legendary season, colliding high-tensile acidity with deep, fine, powdery chalk minerality, bringing its finish into stark focus.

2016 to 2030
In its window now, and has until 2030.
Champagne 2006 scored 93. High sugar and low acidity making winey, richly fruity, open-hearted wines. Generous and inviting, though some find them short of tension and finesse.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2006 taste like?
The prestigious 2006 La Grande Dame is made from 47% Chardonnay and 53% Pinot Noir, and assembles the fruit of eight grand cru villages. Very intense and complex on the nose, this is a full-bodied, round, rich and mouth-filling, but also refined prestige cuvee; it reveals a fascinating purity, precision and freshness. The finish is long and complex, and shows a spicy minerality. There are coffee beans, bread and toast aromas in the aftertaste. This comes highly recommended.

2013 to 2018
The recorded window closed in 2018. Older bottles can still show well, but they are past what the window claims.
Champagne 1998 scored 91. High natural sugar with an excellent level of acidity, an unusual combination pointing to exceptional balance. Rich and elegant with genuine long ageing potential.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1998 taste like?
Light gold. Rich, smoky aromas of buttery pear, peach and smoked meat, complemented by exotic spice accents and a hint of white flowers; seems livelier on the nose than the deep, rich 1996 version. Weighty citrus and orchard fruit flavors are framed by juicy acids, and come across as a bit youthfully stunted right now. With air a note of poached pear emerged, along with a suggestion of toffeed hazelnut. Give this a few years.

The recorded window closed in 2025. Older bottles can still show well, but they are past what the window claims.
Champagne 1996 scored 96. The highest levels of sugar and acidity in living memory, acidity reaching 10.0 g/l. One of the most structured vintages of the twentieth century. Some bottles now show premature oxidation or razor-sharp unbalanced acidity.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1996 taste like?
Deep, highly complex aromas of citrus skin, nutmeg, porcini mushroom, toasted almond and clove. Rich, dry and impressively deep; superconcentrated and oily. A chewy, spicy Champagne that seemed to grow fresher as it opened in the glass. Really explosive on the aftertaste, finishing with a clinging quality and powerful spicy, nutty flavors. A major mouthful of Champagne, at its best at the dinner table. Displays the combination of high ripeness and high acidity of this vintage at its best. This thick, rich, very powerful wine is still a bit youthfully disorganized and will be even better for a few years of additional aging. One of the standouts of my recent tastings.

2005 to 2012
The recorded window closed in 2012. Older bottles can still show well, but they are past what the window claims.
Champagne 1995 scored 94. Rich, generous and balanced, marked by inviting fruitiness and slow-building finesse. Particularly successful for Chardonnay and better than first expected.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1995 taste like?
Deep but youthfully unevolved aromas of toffee apple, lemon and mint. Penetrating, rich and thick, with a deep, yeasty, baked bread component. At once brisk and seamless but brooding more than expressive today. Finishes long, dry and backward. This may ultimately merit a score in the mid-90s.

2000 to 2034
In its window now, and has until 2034.
Champagne 1990 scored 97. Big, powerful and full-flavoured, and originally hailed as the best of the 1988, 1989 and 1990 trilogy. It has matured faster than anticipated and some bottles show premature oxidation, though the best cuvees still drink impeccably.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1990 taste like?
The 1990 La Grande Dame is a shock to the palate after all the older wines in this tasting. Candied lemon, rosemary, dried flowers and spices are all super-expressive in the glass. The 1990 retain a good bit of brightness, especially for its age. The citrus flavors have still not moved into realm or more orangish tonalities, as is likely to happen over time. The 1990 can be enjoyed now and for the next 20 years or so.

1998 to 2010
The recorded window closed in 2010. Older bottles can still show well, but they are past what the window claims.
Champagne 1988 scored 95. Taut and structured at 9.3 per cent alcohol and 9.6 g/l acidity. The first of the 1988, 1989 and 1990 trilogy and the one built for long-term ageing.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1988 taste like?
Still tastes young and fresh, despite having the color of polished brass and showing some mature aromas of mushrooms, meat and honey. Quintessentially elegant, with a long, delicately etched finish.

2015 to 2024
The recorded window closed in 2024. Older bottles can still show well, but they are past what the window claims.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1979 taste like?
The 1979 La Grande Dame is one of the more exotic wines in this tasting. Kirsch, rose petal and Mirabelle plum all give the 1979 an intensely aromatic, perfumed profile that is nicely balanced by underlying veins of acidity that give the wine its freshness and energy.
David Schildknecht, 95 points
2015 to 2020
The recorded window closed in 2020. Older bottles can still show well, but they are past what the window claims.
Champagne 1976 scored 95. Rich, vinous, powerful and soft. Acidity was low at 7.2 g/l and longevity was doubted at the time, but the wines have defied time.
What does Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1976 taste like?
A big, rich wine, the 1976 La Grande Dame reflects the personality of this drought vintage in its size and slightly forward personality. Dried flowers, spices and dried stone fruits all meld together in the glass. Although it is pretty much mature, the 1976 retains plenty of explosive energy and overall depth. I don't see the 1976 improving from here, but it might hold for quite some time.
